2008 Afropunk Festival Lineup

The 2008 Afropunk Festival is back in Brooklyn this year running from 07.05.08 - 07.13.08.  On 07.0508 they will be kicking it off with their opening night party at BAM Skate Park featuring clinics with BMXers and pro afrologoskaters, DJ’s, exhibitions, and competitions.  Along with live music by Janelle Monae, The Apes, Shawn Hewitt and Millsted.  Below is the rest of the lineup, I’ll get you more details on film screenings and lecture panels later.

  • •7.12.08: Concert in Fort Greene Park featuring: Michelle N’degeocello, The Nosiettes, The Dirtbombs, Tamar Kali, Bermuda featuring Antibalas Horn Section, Little Jackie and Sophia RamosDon’t miss this!  Last year’s concert in the park for the Fort Greene Festival featured Talib Kweli, Chip Fu and many guests.   See review here
  • •7.13.08: Block Party on Clinton Ave. in Fort Greene featuring music, fashion, arts & crafts, and more. Live music by Kudu, J*Davey, The Carps, The Thirst and The Caesarz  Last year’s block party featured music from Rich Medina and plenty of street vendors.  See review here

4th Annual Afro-Punk Film Festival @ BAM Rose Cinemas: 7.04.08 - 7.09.08

  • •Series includes New York premieres of White Lies, Black Sheep (James Spooner, 2007) and I’m Through with White Girls (Jennifer Sharp, 2007), and rare screenings of Passing Through (Larry Clark, 1977) and Up Tight! (Jules Dassin, 1968)
  • •Special guest appearances by filmmakers Larry Clark (Kids & Bully), Ethan Higbee, Adam Bhala Lough, James Spooner, and Jennifer Sharp
  • •BAMcinématek, the repertory film program at BAM Rose Cinemas, presents Afro-Punk Festival. The festival returns to BAM for the fourth year in a row with six days of films centered on the concept of black rebellion and change, including narrative features, documentaries, and shorts.
