Adele’s U.S. Debut

2.1.2008

As Yogi Berra said “It’s like déjà vu all over again.”  When I started posting about Adele Adele 19last year it became clear it was only a matter of time until she blew up in America as well.  By now I’m sure she is already sick of the Amy Winehouse comparisons but from the eye of a New York music fan you can’t help but notice all the similiarities.  Just like Winehouse, Adele’s first NYC show will be at Joe’s Pub, for a crowd made up mostly of industry insiders and label execs.  (And just like Amy, the $12 tickets for the 03.18.08 show are already sold out.)  What else…oh, she’s #1 on the charts in the U.K. while she doesn’t have distribution over here (Winehouse was around for years before she broke in the U.S. in 2007; Black didn’t get released here for another two months after her Joe’s Pub show).  It will be interesting to see what the plan is for her next show in New York…Bowery Ballroom seems inenvitable.

Just a side note, I’m also surprised that ‘Chasing Pavement’ was chosen as her first single…a nice song but is slower paced and lighter than the Mark Ronson produced ‘Cold Shoulder’ which you’d think would have much more cross over appeal.
