Celebrate Brooklyn! - Summer 2008 Lineup

5.1.2008

What does deadlymelody.com love the most in the New York City music scene? Free shows. Like many, I’ve missed so many great shows simply because the ticket prices were too ridiculous. Celebrate Brooklyn! will be celebrating 30 years of free concerts at the Prospect Park Bandshell with an incredible lineup of free shows in BK. I give a ton of credit to the team that programmed the talent for this series as they really seem to have something for everyone. Whether you are a hip-hop head, live for classic soul, an indie rock hipster or jazz cat, Celebrate Brooklyn! will have something for you this summer. Help support this important series and give a small donation at the show. Below are selected shows that I know I will try and catch; full lineup of all shows available here.

30 years

  • •06.12.08: Isaac Hayes
  • •06.19.08: Medeski, Martin, & Wood, Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog, Taylor McFerrin & the Cell Theory
  • •06.28.08: Crooklyn Dodgers Reunion with O.C., Jeru the Damaja, Chubb Rock, & EMC featuring Masta Ace, DJ Premier, Ali Shaheed Mohaamad. Hosted by Buckshot and Special Ed (ummm, holy shit??)
  • •07.10.08: Freddy McGregory, Soul Steps
  • •07.11.08: Ticklah, Brazilian Girls, Miranda! (Ticklah is a name you should all become familiar with. He rolls with Antibalas, Easy Dub All Stars, Daptone fam, and is slept on big time. Whether its David Axelrod, his dub persona as Ticklah, or lacing the guitar on ‘Rehab’ hes making sick music that you should be checking)
  • •07.20.08: Celebrate Brooklyn & JDub Records present: Golem, Sway Machinery, Michael Showalter, Deleon, Soulico & special guests
  • •07.24.08: Brave New World Repertory Theatre: Fahrenheit 451
    • “For its third Celebrate Brooklyn outing the daring and ambitious Brooklyn theater company BRAVE NEW WORLD takes on Ray Bradbury’s 1953 science fiction masterpiece (in which all critical thought is suppressed—it’s as topical as ever), which Bradbury himself adapted for the stage in the 1970s. A dynamic video design will transform the Bandshell as the strong performances and imaginative staging, which have made BNW a local favorite, bring the action to vivid life.”
  • •07.25.08: The Philip Glass Ensemble: Powaqqatsi: Life in Transformation with The Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Marta Topferova
  • •08.09.08: Hal Willner’s Bill Withers Project
